Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How many signatures are required for the petition to abolish property taxes in Ohio?
A. 413,488. This is based on the requirement of needing 10% of the number of voters who voted for Governor in the last gubernatorial election (which was 2022). This number can be found on the Ohio Secretary of State's website. However, we know that many signatures will be disqualified for various reasons, so we are aiming for gathering 600,000+ signatures to allow a margin for error.
Q. When does the petition have to be turned in?
A. The full petition must be sent (by a Committee member) to the Secretary of State no later than 125 days prior to the general election. (The general election is in November of every year.). That means the deadline is July 1, 2026. But petitions will need to be turned in to the Committee member (Brian Massie) by June 1, 2026 to allow time for verifying signature legitimacy and checking for anything that might disquality signatures.
Q. Assuming we get enough signatures in time, when will this go on the ballot to be voted on?
A. We are aiming for November of 2026. Why not May of 2026? Because "citizen-led" initiatives can ONLY go on a general election ballot (which means November). Only legislature-led initiatives can go on a Primary (March or May) ballot. This has been confirmed with the Secretary of State's legal counsel.
Q. Where can I go to sign the petition?
A. Go to the official website at AxOhTax (the "dot com" version) and scroll down, you'll see a list of all of Ohio's 88 counties. Click on your county and you will see the signing locations. If there isn't one available in your county, you may want to click on neighboring counties. You do NOT have to sign in your county - you can sign in ANY county... just make sure you tell the petition circulator which county your live in, so they can be sure you sign the right petition. (Petitions are required to be separated by county.)
